Dr. Seweryn Bialasiewicz is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Queensland's Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE), part of the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. His research focuses on microbial ecology, particularly the interactions between microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi) in human health and disease contexts. He has expertise in virology, infectious disease diagnostics, and translational research.
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts, University of Colorado at Boulder
- Masters of Science (Coursework), Griffith University
- Doctor of Philosophy, The University of Queensland
Research Interests:
- Microbial ecology of the human body and its role in health/disease
- One Health approaches linking human, animal, and environmental health
- Viral and bacterial pathogen dynamics in chronic infections (e.g., otitis media, chronic rhinosinusitis)
- Development of microbial-based therapies (phage, probiotics) and antibiotic resistance solutions
Grants & Funding:
- NHMRC Ideas Grant: Harnessing the gut microbiome to improve stem cell transplant outcomes
- AU$1M+ funding for sepsis diagnostics, phage therapy, and Indigenous health projects
Labs/Teams: Leading the ACE Microbial Ecology Group, collaborating on projects like the RAPIDS sepsis cohort and microbiome-based therapeutics for Indigenous communities.
