Paul Evans

Dr. Paul Evans is an ARC Future Fellow and Affiliate of the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE) at The University of Queensland. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from UQ and is affiliated with the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. His research focuses on microbial ecology, bioremediation, and environmental biotechnology, with a particular emphasis on understanding microbiomes in contaminated environments and extremophiles in geothermal systems.

Dr. Evans explores the metabolic capabilities of novel microorganisms, particularly methanogenic archaea and extremophiles, to uncover their roles in biogeochemical cycles. His work bridges fundamental research and applied solutions, such as accelerating soil formation in coal mine spoils and developing biotechnological applications from microbial enzymes.

His recent studies highlight the discovery of novel archaeal lineages and their metabolic potential, including contributions to methane cycling and symbiotic relationships. Collaborative projects, such as the IsoGenie database, underscore his commitment to interdisciplinary environmental research.

Dr. Evans supervises PhD candidates in topics like microbial dark matter, coal spoil rehabilitation, and extremophile metabolism. His grants include funding for exploring archaeal methanogenesis and microbial solutions to environmental challenges.
