Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy is a Professor at Istanbul University specializing in Forensic Medicine. She currently serves as Turkey's representative to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) for the 2022-2027 term. Dr. Atasoy is also an accomplished author and television program host who has significantly contributed to public understanding of forensic science through media appearances and publications.
Coming from a family deeply rooted in forensic medicine—her father Prof. Dr. Şemsi Gök was also a forensic medicine specialist and pathologist—Dr. Atasoy was exposed to the field from childhood. Despite initially aspiring to be an architect during her German high school education, she eventually embraced forensic medicine as her career path. Her research spans forensic medicine, substance addiction, criminal investigations, and the relationship between media coverage and criminal cases.
Dr. Atasoy has noted that the television series "KANIT," which began in 2009, has served as motivation for young people interested in forensic sciences. She actively promotes evidence-based forensic work that minimizes error through concrete evidence rather than assumptions. As Turkey's INCB representative, she contributes to global drug control efforts, with the 2024 report scheduled for release in March 2025.
She advocates for holding accountable those who promote substance use on social media and emphasizes that while complete elimination of substance addiction may not be possible, significant reduction is achievable through proper rehabilitation and monitoring. Dr. Atasoy is critical of information pollution in criminal case coverage and calls for official institutions to have designated media spokespersons to ensure accurate information dissemination.
