معرفی
Seu Sim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. She leads a research program focused on the development of catalytic living materials by integrating engineered bacterial spores with synthetic polymer scaffolds, with applications in environmental bioremediation and sustainable catalysis.
Her research lies at the intersection of materials science, synthetic biology, and environmental chemistry. She investigates the design of robust, recyclable, and dry-storable biohybrid materials capable of degrading toxic environmental compounds. By engineering both Bacillus subtilis spores and polymer interfaces, her work establishes foundational knowledge in dynamic covalent bonding between synthetic and biological components. Her research has been recognized with the prestigious NSF CAREER Award for her proposal titled “Catalytic Living Materials Constructed with Engineered Spores and Polymer Scaffolds”.
Dr. Sim is actively engaged in education and outreach, having developed programs for community college students, K–12 learners, and UCI undergraduates. She mentors students in the polymer chemistry club and integrates research with education to broaden participation in STEM fields.
- NSF CAREER Award
She advises students in chemistry and materials research and is involved in mentoring transfer students and leading educational initiatives. While specific grants are not listed, her NSF CAREER award supports both research and educational programming.
Her laboratory focuses on the synthesis and characterization of spore-polymer composite materials, exploring their physical properties, catalytic efficiency, and recyclability. The team works at the interface of microbiology, polymer science, and environmental technology to develop intelligent, responsive materials for real-world applications.
