Dr. Serwaa Omowale is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and affiliated faculty in the Center for Health Equity. Her research focuses on maternal health disparities, particularly examining factors contributing to maternal mortality and morbidity, the role of stress and work as social determinants of health, and the long-term cardiovascular and cognitive risks associated with poor pregnancy outcomes.
- Education: PhD and master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, bachelor’s in African American Studies from Georgia State University
- Expertise: Clinical social work in maternal and child health, mental health, gerontology, and 13 years of professional experience
- Methodologies: Longitudinal research designs, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), and community-engaged approaches
- International Work: Projects in South Africa addressing teen pregnancy and gender-based violence
