Assoc. Prof. Serkan Özel is a faculty member at Bogazici University’s Department of Mathematics and Science Education and director of the Education Technologies and Research Center. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Educational Technology from Texas A&M University (2009) and a combined B.Sc./M.Sc. in Mathematics Education from Bogazici University (2004).
- Research Interests: STEM education, mathematics learning in early childhood, measurement and evaluation, pattern knowledge, and educational technology integration.
- Notable Projects: Led TUBITAK-funded research on abstraction in early pattern learning, computational thinking programs for middle schoolers, and international collaborations with NSF and IES grants.
His recent publications focus on equality concepts in curricula, role modeling for self-regulation, and technology barriers in math education. Articles highlight cross-cultural studies, cognitive development, and pedagogical strategies. He has received the Teaching Excellence Award (2024) and participates in editorial boards like the International Journal of Educational Studies in Mathematics. Dr. Özel also contributes to children’s learning programs at Arter Contemporary Art Museum and consults on STEM initiatives.
- Scientific Awards: Vanderbilt Global Scholar (2024), Victory Science Award (2022), TASAM Strategic Vision Award (2021), SUNY Global Fellowship (2015).
As an advisor, he has guided over 20 graduate theses on topics ranging from computational thinking to teacher competencies. His work bridges academic research with practical applications, including textbook development and professional development seminars for K-12 educators.
Labs and Teams: Leads the Çocuk Öğrenme Laboratuvarı (Child Learning Lab) and collaborates with national institutions like TUSAŞ and TÜPRAŞ, alongside international networks such as the Cognitive Development Society.
