Serguei Molodtsov

Serguei Molodtsov serves as Scientific Director of European XFEL and leads the ‘Structure research with XFEL and synchrotron radiation’ group at the Institute of Experimental Physics, affiliated with Freiberg University of Mining and Technology.

His research centers on advanced structural investigations using X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) and synchrotron radiation, enabling atomic-resolution analysis of materials under extreme conditions. This work drives innovation in condensed matter physics and materials science, particularly in ultrafast dynamic processes and high-pressure phenomena. Molodtsov’s group develops cutting-edge experimental methodologies that leverage European XFEL’s unique capabilities for time-resolved studies.

As Scientific Director, he oversees strategic operations of the international research facility while maintaining active leadership of his experimental physics group. His dual role bridges large-scale facility management with hands-on research direction, fostering collaborations that advance photon science applications across scientific disciplines.
