Sergiu M. Gorun is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Seton Hall University. His research focuses on photocatalytic materials, particularly phthalocyanines and their applications in environmental remediation, biomedical sensing, and electrochemical systems. He holds a PhD from MIT (1986) and an MS from Columbia University (1983).
Dr. Gorun's work emphasizes the synthesis and characterization of fluorinated phthalocyanines, exploring their roles in singlet oxygen generation, antibacterial activity, and photoelectrochemical sensing. His grants include a $2 million Department of Defense-funded project on fluorine interfaced reactive materials (FIRM) and collaborations with institutions like the University of Antwerp.
- Education:
- PhD in Chemistry, MIT (1986)
- MS in Chemistry, Columbia University (1983)
His research has led to patented innovations, such as photoactive polymer coatings, and awards including Seton Hall’s College Researcher of the Year (2021, 2014). He actively mentors students in synthetic chemistry, materials science, and environmental applications.
Recent studies include collaborations on photocatalytic phenol sensing, nanobody-based immunosensors, and the Goldilocks principle in electrochromic materials. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with practical applications in energy, health, and sustainability.
