Sergey Zenkin is a Research Professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow) since 1997 and Professor at the Higher School of Economics (Saint-Petersburg) since 2017. He has held visiting positions at Sheffield University (2016), Collegium de Lyon (2013-2014), and Stanford University as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar (2011).
His academic background includes:
- Magister degree from Lomonossov Moscow State University (1978) with thesis "Fantastic Genres in French Romantic Literature"
- PhD (Candidate thesis) from Lomonossov Moscow State University (1986) on "The Works of Théophile Gautier"
- Habilitation (Doctoral thesis) from Russian State University for the Humanities (2001) titled "The French Romanticism and the Idea of Culture"
Zenkin specializes in Literary Theory, Intellectual History, and French Literature, with particular focus on 19th-20th century French literary traditions and the history of theoretical ideas in the humanities. His research explores the intersections between literary forms and broader cultural movements.
He has been honored with the French order of Palmes académiques for his internationally acclaimed research on French literature and theory, as well as for his translations of French literary theory, philosophy and human sciences into Russian.
With over 500 publications spanning books in Russian and French, annotated translations, critical editions of French authors, and articles published internationally across 15+ countries, Zenkin has established himself as a leading scholar in his field. He has conducted more than 40 professional stays in Europe, North Africa, and Asia between 1992-2019, totaling approximately four years for research, translation work, lectures, and conferences.
He actively participates in the International Society for Intellectual History, the Society of the 19th-century Studies, the Society Théophile Gautier, and the Group of Sartrian Studies. Since 2004, he has chaired the Commission for the French Literature and Intellectual Culture in Moscow.
