Martine LAVAUD

Martine LAVAUD is a Professor of French Literature at the University of Artois (UFR Letters and Arts, Arras). She holds a Doctorate in Modern Literature and an Habilitation to Direct Research. Her academic career includes roles as Secretary-General of the Théophile Gautier Society and editor of their journal Bulletin de la Société Théophile Gautier.

Research Interests: Her work focuses on 19th-century French literature, particularly Théophile Gautier, Romanticism during the Third Republic, intersections of literature with photography/media, and representations of science and intelligence. She has organized over 15 international conferences, including major events on Gautier's bicentenary and the role of photography in authorship.

Publications Overview: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and 20 edited volumes, including landmark studies on Gautier’s oeuvre, literature-media interactions, and the cultural history of intelligence. Recent works explore sport gender dynamics and interdisciplinary approaches to 19th-century studies.
