Sergey A. Krupenko, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health. His research focuses on enzymes regulating folate metabolism and their roles in cancer biology, cellular proliferation, and epigenetic regulation. He is affiliated with the Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis, NC. Dr. Krupenko teaches NUTR 868: Advanced Nutrition Biochemistry: Nutrition and Cancer.
Education:
- B.S., Biochemistry, Byelorussian State University, 1980
- Candidate of Science (PhD equivalent), Biochemistry, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Byelorussian Academy of Science, 1987
Research Interests: Dr. Krupenko's work explores the mechanistic links between folate metabolism, enzyme activity (e.g., ALDH1L1), and cancer progression. Key areas include metabolic regulation of cellular proliferation, epigenetic silencing in tumors, and the role of Rho GTPases in metastasis. His studies integrate molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell signaling to uncover therapeutic targets.
Publications: His recent work highlights discoveries in folate-diet interactions affecting cancer metastasis, JNK signaling in apoptosis, and the epigenetic control of metabolic regulators. Notable contributions include defining the role of ALDH1L1 in inhibiting cell motility and elucidating transcriptomic landscapes of brain cells.
Labs & Teams: Based at the Nutrition Research Institute, he collaborates within the Gillings School's interdisciplinary environment, contributing to translational research at the intersection of nutrition and oncology.
