Serge Desgreniers is a Full Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Ottawa. His research focuses on condensed matter and quantum materials under extreme conditions, including high-pressure and low-temperature environments. He has also contributed to the growth and characterization of high-purity diamond for quantum sensing applications.
- Doctorate in Science (Physics/Materials Science), Cornell University (1990)
- Master of Science (Materials Science), Cornell University (1987)
- M.Sc. (Condensed Matter Physics), Université de Sherbrooke (1984)
- B.Sc. (Physics), Université de Sherbrooke (1982)
His research interests span extreme-condition material science, laser spectroscopy, and synchrotron radiation techniques. His work explores structural phase transitions, chemical bonding, and electronic properties in materials like hydrogen-rich compounds, semiconductors, and exotic alloys. A recurring theme in his publications is the application of high-pressure X-ray diffraction and computational methods.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in high-pressure synthesis of nitrogen-rich materials, metallization of organic semiconductors, and structural analysis of alloys and hydrates. Key subfields include vibrational spectroscopy, molecular dynamics, and pressure-induced spin transitions.
