Selmiye Alkan Gürsel is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Sabancı University's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. Her research focuses on advanced materials for energy applications, including fuel cells, batteries, and nanomaterials. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Middle East Technical University (2002) and has conducted postdoctoral research at Paul Scherrer Institut (Switzerland) and the University of Florida (USA).
Her work emphasizes radiation-induced grafting, graphene-based electrodes, and proton exchange membranes. Key contributions include developing high-performance fuel cell membranes and nanocomposites for energy storage. She has received prestigious awards such as the L’Oréal Turkey for Women in Science (2010) and the Science Academy Young Scientists Award (2013).
Alkan Gürsel leads interdisciplinary projects funded by TÜBİTAK, Horizon 2020, and the Graphene Flagship. Her team collaborates internationally, advancing materials for renewable energy systems. She teaches courses in Electrochemistry and Analytical Chemistry and has mentored numerous graduate students and postdocs.
