معرفی
Prof. Thomas Schmidt serves as Full Professor and Chair for Electrochemistry at ETH Zürich's Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences since 2011, while concurrently leading the Research Division Energy & Environment at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) since 2018. His dual affiliation bridges fundamental electrochemical research with industrial energy applications.
Research interests focus on electrocatalysis, fuel cell technology, and energy storage systems, particularly membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and radiation-grafted membranes. His work spans fundamental electrocatalysis studies to commercial MEA development, with emphasis on oxygen electrocatalysis and oxide-containing catalysts.
Current research trends show strong focus on
- Advanced battery materials characterization
- CO2 conversion catalysts for renewable fuels
- Electrode degradation mechanisms
- Energy storage system integration
Scientific recognition includes:
- Charles W. Tobias Young Investigator Award (2010)
- Otto-Monsted Visiting Professorship (2013)
Prof. Schmidt directs the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research (SCCER) Heat & Electricity Storage since 2014 and serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. His leadership spans academic research, industrial R&D at BASF Fuel Cell GmbH (2002-2010), and national energy strategy initiatives.
