Prof. Sebastian Richter is a Professor of Artistic Cinematography at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM). He holds a dual academic and professional background, having worked as a freelance cinematographer in over 70 film productions across documentary and feature film genres since 1989. His career includes a visiting professorship at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg (2003) and permanent teaching roles at KHM since 2000. His research focuses on the interplay between cinematic techniques and societal context, emphasizing visual storytelling and film history.
Education: Born in Berlin (1963). Camera assistant at DEFA Studio (1983–1984). Graduated as a qualified cameraman from HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg (1989). Extensive freelance career included over 50 feature-length films.
Teaching: Leads seminars such as "How do I find my attitude" (theory) and "Staging and Resolution" (practical film direction). Integrates Meisner Technique workshops and post-production coordination. Current courses emphasize director-cameraman collaboration and historical film analysis.
