Previously, from 2020-2024, he served as a Research Associate at the Chair of Economic and Social History at the same university. His academic career has been focused on historical research with particular emphasis on economic, social, and environmental history from the 13th to 19th centuries.
His educational background includes:
- Master of Arts in History from the University of Regensburg (2017), with a focus on Economic and Social History
- Bachelor's degrees in History, German Studies, and Political Science from the University of Regensburg (2014-2016)
- Ongoing doctoral research at the Research Training Group 2337 "Metropolitanism in the Pre-Modern Era" with the working title "Material Living Standards and Market Economics in Southern Germany, 1354-1913"
Dr. Pößniker's research interests span Economic History, Social History, and Environmental History from the 13th to 19th centuries, with a particular focus on comparative regional approaches. His work examines working societies and wealth development, historical demography, poverty and welfare systems, and the intersection of archival sources with Digital Humanities methodologies. He has developed expertise in the digitization of large archival collections, database design, and AI-supported historical research, particularly in analyzing historical accounting practices. His regional focus centers on Bavaria and Southern Germany, with special attention to Regensburg's historical development.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on German-Polish historical relations, archival research methodologies, and the economic and social history of Regensburg and Bavaria. His work frequently addresses topics of poverty, welfare systems, inflation, and material living standards across different historical periods, from the medieval era through the Weimar Republic and into the post-war period. There's a clear trajectory in his research toward integrating digital methodologies with traditional historical analysis, particularly in the processing and interpretation of archival accounting records.
He is actively involved in teaching at both the Chair of Bavarian Regional History and the Chair of Economic and Social History, offering courses on regional historical sources, urban economic history, and social conditions in pre-modern Bavaria. His teaching approach emphasizes hands-on engagement with primary sources and combines analog and digital research methods.
Sebastian Pößniker is a member of the Gesellschaft für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte (Society for Social and Economic History) and the Historischer Verein für Oberpfalz und Regensburg (Historical Association for Upper Palatinate and Regensburg), where he serves on the committee of the Forum Mittelalter at the University of Regensburg. He has been actively involved in several collaborative research projects, most notably the cooperative project "The Accounting Books of Regensburg's St. Katharinenspital 1354 to 1934" since 2018, which involves digitization and cataloging work in multiple archives.
