Sebastian Mendes (1948–2018) was a Professor of Art at Western Washington University since 2001, affiliated with the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Fine and Performing Arts. He specialized in sculpture, multi-media installations, and sound-based art, emphasizing boundary-pushing creativity in his teaching and practice.
Education: Graduate diplomas from St. Martin’s School of Art (London) and Stanford University. His work blended personal history—particularly his grandfather’s role as a WWII Portuguese diplomat saving refugees—with artistic innovation. He led Western’s sculpture program, expanded curricula to include site-specific installations, and mentored numerous successful students.
Contributions included organizing Bellingham’s Electronic Arts Festival (BEAF), co-chairing the Sculpture Collection Acquisitions Committee, and producing Yellow Radio, a platform for experimental sound art. He was an active union steward and global advocate for artistic collaboration. A memorial celebration was held at Western’s Western Gallery in May 2018.
