Sebastian Gritsch

Sebastian Gritsch is a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology within the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). He holds a Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree.

His research focuses on environmental biotechnology, particularly the development of bio-based and bioactive materials from waste streams. He specializes in lignin modification, enzyme production from industrial byproducts, and sustainable agricultural solutions. His work often involves waste valorization and green chemistry to create eco-friendly products like fertilizer coatings and adsorber gels for metal recovery.

Sebastian is currently leading the BIOBUILD project (2024–2027), which explores bio-based building materials with thermal storage functions, and co-leading the Neuartige Analysemethoden zur Selektion und Charakterisierung nachhaltiger Enzymsysteme project (2023–2033) focused on sustainable enzyme systems. His past projects include REEaLIGN (2025–2027) for lignin-based metal recovery and MixMatters (2023–2027) for bio-waste valorization in the agri-food sector. These initiatives are funded by the European Commission and national companies.

His publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to bio-based polymers, low-CO2 coatings, and waste stream utilization in agriculture. He collaborates closely with researchers like Doris Ribitsch and Georg Gübitz, and his work employs advanced techniques such as atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
