Professor Sebastian Aland holds dual appointments as Professor of Numerical Analysis at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology since 2021 and Professor of Modeling and Simulation at Dresden University of Applied Sciences since 2017. He leads the Sebastian Aland Research Group and is affiliated with the Dresden International Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Life Sciences. His academic journey includes serving as a Junior Research Group Leader at the Institute of Scientific Computing, TU Dresden (2014-2016), a PostDoc at the University of California, Irvine (2013-2014), and completing his PhD in Mathematics at TU Dresden (2009-2012).
Professor Aland's research focuses on mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of dynamic biological interfaces. His group develops models for the complex interplay of fluid, elastic and reactive phases that move, deform and grow over time in biological systems. Key research areas include pattern formation and flow dynamics of active surfaces, biomolecular condensates interacting with membranes, and wetting dynamics on deformable structures. His work bridges mathematics, physics, and biology to understand fundamental principles beyond experimental observation.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on developing novel numerical methods for biological applications. The trend shows increasing sophistication in modeling complex biological phenomena, particularly in simulating interactions between biomolecular condensates and cellular structures. His work consistently combines mathematical rigor with practical biological applications, advancing both computational methods and biological understanding.
Professor Aland's research group offers opportunities for students through the Dresden International Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Life Sciences. His advising approach emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, working closely with both theoretical and experimental groups to reveal mechanisms of biological processes. The group provides training in advanced computational techniques while addressing fundamental biological questions.
Based at the Sebastian Aland Research Group (alandlab.de), his team combines expertise in mathematical modeling, high-performance computing, and biological applications. The lab specializes in developing numerical methods to simulate complex biological interfaces, with a particular focus on active surfaces and biomolecular condensates, creating a unique interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection of mathematics, physics, and biology.
