Sebastiaan Straatsma serves as a Media & Materials Tutor in the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK), with additional affiliation to the academy's Common Ground program.
His research focuses on archetypes and emotionally charged objects, examining historical narratives, nostalgic value, and temporal signatures embedded in artifacts. Through straatsma studio, he creates experimental objects that deconstruct form, context, and functionality, bridging material culture with contemporary design practice. His work explores how everyday items carry cultural memory and emotional resonance.
Affiliated with both the BA Interior Architecture & Furniture Design program and Common Ground initiatives, Straatsma integrates artistic practice with pedagogical frameworks to investigate object-human relationships in design education.
