Sean X. Goudie is an Associate Professor of English at Pennsylvania State University and Director of the Center for American Literary Studies (CALS). His work focuses on redefining American literary history through hemispheric and transnational perspectives, emphasizing Caribbean-North American relations. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, an M.A. from NC State University, and a B.A. from Davidson College.
Research emphasizes U.S. imperial expansion's literary dimensions, supported by grants from the Mellon Foundation and McNeil Center. His award-winning book Creole America (2006) reinterprets early U.S. literature through Caribbean influences. Current projects examine late 19th/early 20th century U.S. empire-building narratives.
Awards include the 2007 MLA First Book Prize. Editorial roles include serving on American Literature's board and leading the MLA's American Literature to 1800 division. Research integrates race, ethnicity, and cultural theory to challenge national literary boundaries.
