Dr. Sean Seeger is a Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Literature at the University of Essex's Department of Literature Film and Theatre Studies (LiFTS). He previously taught at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has held visiting professorships at the University of Konstanz and the University of Bergamo. His research focuses on modernism, speculative fiction, utopian studies, queer theory, and cultural theory, with notable works including Nonlinear Temporality in Joyce and Walcott: History Repeating Itself with a Difference (2017) and the upcoming Utopian Variations (2025). He collaborates with sociologist Daniel Davison-Vecchione on projects linking speculative fiction to social theory. Dr. Seeger has received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Centre for Literary Translation.
His academic leadership includes roles as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and recipient of the University of Essex Excellence in Education Award. He supervises PhD students in his research areas and teaches across modern literature, cultural theory, and interdisciplinary studies.
Key research themes include nonlinear temporality in modernist texts, intersections of queer theory with utopian/dystopian narratives, and the sociological dimensions of speculative fiction. His recent publications explore transhumanism, queer ecology, and the relationship between social forecasting and literary form.
