Adam Stock is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature at York St John University's School of Humanities. He joined the university as a Lecturer in 2015 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2019. His academic journey includes teaching positions at Durham University starting in 2008 and Newcastle University where he served as Research Associate from 2012 to 2015. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Concordia University, Montreal in summer 2015.
His educational background includes a BA (Hons) in History and Politics from Birmingham University (2006), an MA in Cultural and Intellectual History from Queen Mary University of London (2007), and a PhD from Durham University (2012) focused on mid-twentieth century dystopian fiction.
Dr Stock specializes in the interdisciplinary areas of Utopian Studies, science fiction, and modernisms. His research examines dystopian fiction from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with particular attention to boundaries and borderlands, spatialization, and the temporalities of speculative fiction. His 2019 monograph Dystopian Fiction and Political Thought: Narratives of World Politics (Routledge) analyzes early twentieth-century dystopian works. His recent scholarship explores migration narratives within dystopian frameworks and the relationship between utopian thought and academic funding structures.
His extensive publication record demonstrates significant contributions to Utopian Studies, with numerous articles in Utopian Studies, C21 Literature, and other prominent journals. His work often bridges literary analysis with political theory, examining how speculative fiction engages with real-world political concerns.
Dr Stock served as Honorary Treasurer of the Utopian Studies Society from 2013 to 2019. He has secured funding from prestigious organizations including the Leverhulme Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). His teaching portfolio at York St John encompasses literary and critical theory, experimental writing, post-human studies, and employability modules alongside period and genre-focused courses.
He actively supervises postgraduate research and welcomes inquiries from potential students interested in his research specialisms. His international scholarly engagement includes numerous conference presentations across Europe and North America, reflecting the global relevance of his work on speculative fiction and political thought.
