Sean S Gulick is a Research Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. His work bridges tectonic-climate interactions, catastrophism in geologic records, and marine/planetary geophysical imaging at nested resolutions.
- Education: Ph.D. from Lehigh University, B.S. from University of North Carolina
Research Focus: Gulick investigates geohazards at convergent margins, planetary habitability, and post-impact ecosystems. Key projects include studying tectonic-glacial interactions in Alaska, Chicxulub meteor impact effects, and Martian sedimentary processes.
Scientific Leadership: As co-director of the Center for Planetary Systems Habitability, he fosters interdisciplinary collaborations across schools and borders. His fieldwork spans subduction zones in Alaska, Sumatra, New Zealand, and Japan.
- Major Awards:
- Fellow, Geological Society of America (2018)
- Eugene Shoemaker Memorial Award (2017)
- Jackson School Outstanding Researcher Award (2015)
- IODP-related distinguished lectureships
Academic Service: Currently serves as Associate Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences (2021-present) and chairs multiple IODP committees. Advises graduate students in projects from Greenland moraine dynamics to lunar radar analysis.
