Sean Gordon Valderhaug Bell is a Research Fellow and PhD Candidate at NordART, affiliated with the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in Oslo, Norway. He works within the Department of Conducting, Voice and Church Music, focusing on artistic research that bridges historical and contemporary performance practices.
His educational background includes a Master's degree in Early Music Voice from The Royal Conservatoire in The Hague (2020-2022), an Erasmus+ exchange at the same institution (2018-2019), and a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the Norwegian Academy of Music (2015-2019). He also completed musicology studies at the University of Oslo (2014-2015).
Bell's research centers on Historically Informed Performance (HIP) through a poetic, experimental, and 'haptic' approach. His doctoral project 'Revive the Leaden Strings' explores 17th-century British vocal music through three laboratory experiments: 'Recording Nostalgia' (using baroque guitar, viol, and tape machines), 'MASK' (reimagining masque performances through contemporary art), and 'Baroque Band' (merging early music ensembles with pop/jazz band traditions). He investigates how musical material encodes and creates systems of belief across history, examining the technologies (in Foucault's sense) of past and present performance practices.
As a countertenor and performance artist, Bell has performed with ensembles including Ny Norsk Messingkvintett, Early Voices, and The Norwegian Soloist Choir. His notable works include the synth-pop album 'Dowland Downloaded,' the chamber opera 'Nara,' and his debut at Høstutstillingen with 'Stille Amare.' In November 2023, he made his debut at the Norwegian Opera and Ballet in the role of Johan in David Bruce's opera 'Ingenting (Nothing).'
Bell actively engages in instrument building, music electronics, and improvisation. His performance history spans European venues including Gaudeamus Terrapolis in Utrecht, Black Box Teater in Oslo, and festivals like Borealis in Bergen. Supervised by Professor Frank Havrøy (main supervisor) and Professor Morten Qvenild, Bell's work challenges conventional boundaries between early music performance, contemporary art, and technological exploration.
