Sean Eedy is a historian specializing in Modern European History, currently teaching at Carleton University and Trent University’s Peterborough and Durham campuses. He is affiliated with the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University, where he teaches courses on European history, World War One, the Russian Revolution, the Soviet Union, the Holocaust, and the history of comic books.
His research focuses on East German popular culture, particularly children's media and comic books in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He explores how state-controlled cultural production reflected Party ideology and how underground comix functioned as forms of resistance. His work intersects history, cultural studies, and media analysis.
Sean's recent publications examine the representation of the Holocaust in GDR comics, time travel narratives in historical comics, and DEFA's animated adaptations of Grimm fairy tales. These works reveal a consistent interest in how history is mediated through popular culture, especially under authoritarian regimes. His scholarship highlights the political dimensions of seemingly innocuous media forms.
His first book, Four Color Communism: Comic Books and Contested Power in the German Democratic Republic, is forthcoming with Berghahn Books in 2021, marking a major contribution to the field of GDR cultural history.
