Sean Bew is an Associate Professor in Chemistry at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology. He holds a BSc from the University of Leicester and a PhD from the University of Bristol. His postdoctoral research spanned institutions including the University of Bath, University of Nottingham, Cardiff University, and the University of Oxford, focusing on medicinal chemistry, boron-containing compounds, and asymmetric synthesis.
His research interests center on synthetic organic chemistry, organocatalysis, supramolecular chemistry, and calixarene-based materials. He develops methodologies for synthesizing bioactive molecules, including aziridines and heterocyclic compounds, with applications in drug discovery and biomaterials. Key projects include gold-sensing calixarenes and stable isotope-labeled agents for medical imaging.
- Grants: Recipient of funding from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau, GlaxoSmithKline, and the Big C Appeal.
- Administrative Roles: Organic safety officer, School library representative, and Chair of the mass spectrometry committee.
His lab explores bioinspired catalysis, molecular machines, and the synthesis of glycopeptide antibiotics. Recent work includes halogen bonding catalysis and calixarene-based sensors for Au³+ ions.
