Sean Avery is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Geography within the School of Global Affairs at King's College London. With over four decades of professional experience, he specializes in engineering hydrology, hydraulic structures, and environmental management. He holds chartered statuses as a Civil Engineer, Water and Environmental Manager, and Environmentalist.
His career includes senior management roles in East Africa's largest civil engineering consultancies, where he led water, wastewater, and environmental divisions. He pioneered Kenya's first Environmental Unit. Current research focuses on the Omo/Turkana Basin in northern Kenya, assessing impacts of major hydropower and irrigation projects on Lake Turkana. He also develops remote sensing tools for ecological monitoring.
Research interests include land use changes, sediment runoff, major dam impacts, rainfall patterns, and water quality dynamics in arid regions. His work spans Borneo, Africa, Indian Ocean Islands, and the Middle East.
