Scott Wilkes is the Head of the School of Medicine and Professor of General Practice and Primary Care at the University of Sunderland. With over 30 years of experience as a GP and 24 years in NHS research, he leads initiatives in medical education and clinical research, including establishing Sunderland’s new medical school to widen access to medicine for non-traditional candidates. His academic leadership spans roles like Chair of the NIHR RfPB Committee and Non-Executive Director at Academic Health Science Network (NENC).

His research focuses on infertility management, hypothyroidism in general practice, and integrating new technologies into clinical consultations. Scientific awards include the RCGP Research Paper of the Year Award. He supervises numerous PhD and Master’s students, particularly in thyroid research, cancer detection, and medical technology. His funded projects (e.g., CANAssess2, AFFECT Trial) reflect his impact on health policy and patient outcomes.
