Dr. Scott T. Marshall is a Professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research integrates Fault Mechanics, Satellite Geodesy, and Data Science to understand Earth deformation processes through computational modeling and geophysical data analysis.
- Education: B.S. in Geology (Wright State University), M.S. in Geophysics (University of Idaho), Ph.D. in Geophysics (University of Massachusetts)
Research focuses on three primary areas:
- Fault Mechanics: 3D modeling of complex fault systems in southern California to study slip behavior and seismic potential.
- Satellite Geodesy: Using GNSS and InSAR data to measure tectonic/non-tectonic deformation patterns.
- Near-Surface Geophysics: Ground-Penetrating Radar and electrical resistivity for subsurface imaging.
Scientific awards include Faculty of Distinction (2016, Appalachian State University) and Outstanding Visualization and Computation Award (2012, ASU). His data science work automates Community Earth Models (CEM) for SCEC and develops open-access web tools.
