Yuri Fialko is a Professor at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) within the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. His research focuses on crustal deformation, space geodesy (InSAR/GPS), earthquake physics, and volcanology. He holds a B.S. from Kiev University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Fialko has contributed to understanding deformation mechanisms related to earthquakes, magmatic processes, and active tectonics using integrated geodetic and numerical modeling approaches.
Key research areas include interseismic strain accumulation on the San Andreas Fault, coseismic and postseismic deformation of major earthquakes (e.g., 2019 Ridgecrest, 2015 Gorkha, 2023 Kahramanmaraş), and geodetic analysis of fault systems. He has advised numerous Ph.D. students who now hold academic and research positions globally.
Publications emphasize geodetic observations of fault slip, numerical modeling of deformation processes, and interdisciplinary studies linking geodesy with seismology. His work often involves satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) and GPS data to quantify tectonic and volcanic deformation.
