Scott Smith

Professor Scott Smith serves as Deputy Dean (International) in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology at The University of Adelaide. He is also Chair of the Academic Board and a Professor of Structural Engineering in the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering. His roles include leadership in academic, research, and industry sectors, with past positions as Founding Dean of Engineering at Southern Cross University and faculty member at The University of Hong Kong.

Education: BE (Civil) from UNSW (1994), PhD in Structural Engineering (1999), MBA from Imperial College London (2018), and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (2005). Prior to Adelaide, he held roles at The University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Research focuses on off-earth construction materials and FRP composites for infrastructure repair. His work has led to over 290 publications, AUD$14M in grants, and awards like the Warren Medal and Howard Medal. He chairs major conferences (e.g., APFIS, ISOC) and founded the Australian Society for Off-Earth Construction (ASOC).

Teaching contributions include curriculum development in Australia and Hong Kong, with subjects on structural engineering, sustainable development, and research ethics. Recognized with Best Teacher and Team Excellence awards.

Grants exceed AUD$14M, including ARC Discovery and Linkage projects. Professional leadership includes presidencies at IIFC and roles in Engineers Australia and AAEE.
