Scott Radcliffe is Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Radcliffe has established himself as a leading expert in swine nutrition and nonruminant animal science, with particular focus on nutrient absorption, phytase research, and sustainable production systems.
Dr. Radcliffe earned his educational foundation at Virginia Tech, receiving his B.S. in Animal and Poultry Science in 1995, followed by an M.S. in Nonruminant Nutrition in 1997, and completing his Ph.D. in Nonruminant Nutrition in 2000. His academic journey has been marked by numerous prestigious fellowships including the John Lee Pratt Graduate Fellowship (1997-2000) and the Henry Budd Fellowship (1996-1997).
Dr. Radcliffe's research program centers on swine nutrition with emphasis on mineral metabolism, particularly calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, and the development of sustainable swine production systems. His work explores nutrient absorption mechanisms, phytase efficacy, and alternative feeding strategies to reduce environmental impact while maintaining animal productivity. Recent research has expanded into animal welfare assessment through physiological monitoring techniques, particularly using heart rate variability analysis to measure stress and pain responses in production animals.
Analysis of Dr. Radcliffe's publication record reveals a strong trajectory toward sustainable production systems, with increasing focus on antibiotic alternatives, environmental impact reduction, and animal welfare assessment. His work bridges fundamental physiological research with practical applications in commercial swine production, demonstrating consistent innovation in addressing industry challenges.
Dr. Radcliffe has received numerous scientific awards recognizing both his research and teaching excellence:
- Department of Animal Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award (2019, 2013)
- Finalist for the international 2018 Hans Sigrist Award
- Featured in 'Profiles in Teaching', Purdue Agriculture (2017)
- Purdue Bravo Award (2014, 2016)
- Purdue College of Agriculture Dean's Team Award (2005, 2009)
- Outstanding Recent Alumnus, Virginia Tech (2008-2009)
In addition to his research program, Dr. Radcliffe has been instrumental in developing educational initiatives in animal sciences, particularly in adapting teaching methods for online and hybrid learning environments. His leadership as Department Chair involves guiding research directions, curriculum development, and fostering collaborative relationships between academic, extension, and industry partners.
