He specializes in 16th and 17th-century British literary and cultural studies, with a focus on topics such as immigration, plague, race, and the intersection of religion and economy. His research has been published in books like Alien Albion: Literature and Immigration in Early Modern England (2014) and A Weaver-Poet and the Plague: Labor, Poverty, and the Household in Shakespeare's London (2020), which explores the life of William Muggins during the 1603 plague.
- Education: PhD (2007, University at Buffalo), MA (San Francisco State University), BA (San Diego State University).
- Co-Edited Works: Religion and the Medieval and Early Modern Global Marketplace (2021) and Religion and the Early Modern British Marketplace (2021), both with Kristin M. S. Bezio.
- Current Projects: Co-editing a volume on early modern drama in the context of Brexit and neonationalism.
His research often employs microhistorical approaches, blending literary criticism with social and economic analysis. He regularly teaches courses on Shakespeare, Renaissance poetry, and early women writers.
Publications highlight themes like labor, poverty, and the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized groups in early modern England. His work challenges traditional narratives by centering underrepresented voices, such as William Muggins, a weaver-poet whose writings reflect the struggles of London's 'middling sort' during the plague.
Oldenburg's interdisciplinary collaborations bridge religious studies, economics, and global history, emphasizing the entanglement of faith and commerce in pre-modern societies.
