Steve Hindle

Steve Hindle is Derek Hirst Endowed Professor of Early Modern British History at Washington University. His scholarship examines social and economic transformations in 16th-18th century Britain through microhistorical approaches, particularly focusing on rural communities, labor systems, and governance structures.

Research integrates archival analysis with theoretical frameworks to reconstruct everyday life in historical villages, with recent work exploring spatial relationships in agrarian societies. His award-winning book The Social Topography of a Rural Community exemplifies this methodology.
