Scott Michaelsen is a Professor of English Film Studies at Michigan State University, specializing in American literature, literatures of the Americas, and interdisciplinary theoretical studies. He co-edits CR: The New Centennial Review and the SUNY Press series “Literature… in Theory”. His research bridges philosophy, cultural politics, and popular culture, with notable works on multiculturalism, sovereignty, and science fiction.
Michaelsen received his Ph.D. in English from SUNY at Buffalo. His teaching focuses on literary theory, American literature, and cultural identities, as seen in courses like ENG885: History of Literary Criticism and IAH207: Literature, Cultures, and Identities.
His awards include the Phoenix Editorial Achievement Award, Rosenberg Teaching Award, and NEH/ACLS fellowships. Recent projects explore Lovecraftian letters, Afrofuturism, and post-9/11 sovereignty debates.
Michaelsen collaborates extensively with David E. Johnson and other scholars, co-authoring works such as Border Theory and editing journals. His work critiques cultural boundaries and interrogates disciplinary histories, emphasizing theoretical rigor and interdisciplinary dialogue.
