Scott Michael Lynch is a Professor of Sociology and Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Director of the Duke Center for Population Health and Aging and Associate Director of the Duke Population Research Institute. His research focuses on social epidemiology, the demography of aging, and statistical methodology, particularly Bayesian approaches. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University (2001) and an M.S. in Statistics (1999), with prior roles at Princeton University (2001–2014).
Research Interests: Lynch examines how social factors like race, socioeconomic status, and stress influence health outcomes, integrating statistical methods to analyze longitudinal data. His recent work addresses disparities in cardiovascular disease, hearing impairment, and Gulf War veteran health. He also develops Bayesian methods for demographic analysis and life course studies.
Grants & Awards: Notable grants include NIH-funded projects on heart failure disparities (2022–2027) and Gulf War illness biomarkers (2023–2027). Awards include the ASA Methodology Section’s Leo Goodman Award (2014) and election to the Gerontological Society of America (2008).
Teaching: Lynch teaches courses on social determinants of health disparities, advanced demographic methods, and structural equation modeling. His mentorship spans statistical training and interdisciplinary research.
Labs/Initiatives: Leads Duke’s Center for Population Health and Aging and collaborates with the Duke Population Research Institute, advancing research on aging, health equity, and life course dynamics.
