Professor Scott McCracken holds the position of Professor of Twentieth-Century Literature and Head of the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary University of London. He earned his BA from the University of Cambridge and his PhD from King’s College London. With extensive teaching experience at institutions including the University of Salford and Keele University, he has also served as a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University and a visiting Professor at the University of British Columbia.
His research focuses on modernist literature, particularly the work of Dorothy Richardson, and the intersections of political defeat with literary expression. He leads the AHRC-funded Dorothy Richardson Scholarly Editions Project, aiming to reposition Richardson within literary canon. His monograph, Thinking Through Defeat: Literary Responses to Political Failure, examines defeat narratives across 1871, 1933, and 1989.
McCracken is a member of the Sexual Cultures Research Group and editorial collective of new formations. He supervises doctoral students on topics ranging from modernist authors to contemporary literary representations. Public engagement includes exhibitions on Richardson’s life and a blue plaque commemorating her residence in London.
