Scott M. MacRae

Dr. Scott M. MacRae is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and the Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester. He is a globally recognized refractive surgeon with over 30 years of experience in corneal specialty and 20+ years in refractive surgery, having performed over 20,000 laser vision correction procedures. His academic appointments include the Flaum Eye Institute, where he directs Refractive Services. He holds patents in refractive surgical techniques and has co-authored seminal texts on wavefront sensing, including Wavefront Customized Visual Correction.

Dr. MacRae completed medical training at the University of Wisconsin and held cornea fellowships at Medical College of Wisconsin and Emory University. Before joining the University of Rochester in 1998, he spent 16 years at Oregon Health Sciences University. His research focuses on laser vision correction technology, corneal aberrations, and surgical outcomes, with over 65 journal articles and 21 book chapters to his name.

His honors include the Ziemer Award, multiple 'Best Paper' awards from ASCRS, and recognition as a Top 50 Opinion Leader in Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has served on FDA panels and holds leadership roles in professional committees, emphasizing patient safety and innovation in refractive surgery.

Dr. MacRae’s work spans surgical instrument design, complication management, and global education, training over 400 surgeons. He is a frequent international lecturer, with expertise in LASIK, PRK, and corneal pathology. His current initiatives include advancing wavefront-guided therapies and collaborating with industry via the Alliance for Vision Excellence to optimize laser vision correction outcomes.
