Scott Gwinnell is a Lecturer at Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he teaches jazz theory, improvisation, arranging, and history. He also serves as Director of Jazz Education at Music Hall Performing Arts Center, adjunct faculty at University of Toledo, and faculty at Michigan State University's Community Music School program.
Gwinnell's research interests focus on jazz composition and performance, with particular expertise in big band arrangements and cross-disciplinary applications of jazz. His creative work spans from symphony orchestra compositions to small ensemble works, film scoring, and musical theatre productions including Bebop, based on Charlie Parker's life.
As a performer, Gwinnell has recorded over 50 professional releases and performed with jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Heath, and Aretha Franklin. His recording Mulgrew-ology reached #32 on international jazz charts and earned three Detroit Music Awards.

Gwinnell directs Oakland University's jazz vocal groups and performs in the faculty jazz ensemble. He founded the Detroit Jazz Workshop in 2009, which now attracts international students, and serves on the Michigan Jazz Festival board. His educational initiatives include creating music programs with the Detroit Public School system through the Music Hall Performing Arts Center.
