Scott Boltwood is the Henry Carter Stuart Professor of English at Emory Henry College. His teaching spans ancient to Twentieth-Century literature, with specializations in Contemporary British writing, Irish literature, and seminars on works like Hamlet, Mrs Dalloway, and Seamus Heaney's poetry. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from Cornell University.
Dr. Boltwood's research focuses on Irish literature, particularly playwrights like Dion Boucicault, Augusta Gregory, Brian Friel, Stewart Love, and Frank McGuinness. His scholarly works include Brian Friel: The Essential Criticism (2018) and Renegotiating and Resisting Irish Nationalism in 20th-Century Irish Drama (2009). He has held roles such as Research Fellow at the Academy of Irish Cultural Heritages (2003-04) and Visiting Professor at Queen’s University Belfast (2008), and served as a Fulbright Scholar in Drama (2011-12). Currently, he collaborates with Belfast’s Ulster Group Theater.
In 2013, he received the CASE Carnegie Foundation’s Professor of the Year award for Virginia. His recent work explores Northern Irish drama from 1939 to 1968, blending historical analysis with cultural critique.
