Scot Bateman

Scot Bateman is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School with joint appointments in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He directs research in pediatric critical care, focusing on evidence-based transfusion practices, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) decision-making, and management of pediatric poisonings. Bateman co-chairs the Pediatric Critical Care Transfusion and Anemia Expertise Initiative, developing consensus guidelines for blood product use in critically ill children.

His research examines the impact of blood storage duration on outcomes, strategies to minimize iatrogenic anemia, and ECMO transfer protocols for non-ECMO centers. Bateman also investigates community-based pediatric palliative care models and gene therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. He developed educational interventions like 'The Wrap-Up' to support residents facing pediatric deaths.

Bateman maintains active NIH funding for studies on transfusion practices and has led multicenter initiatives establishing evidence-based guidelines for plasma and platelet transfusion in pediatric critical care.
