Schuyler Whelden is an Assistant Professor of Music at the College of the Holy Cross, specializing in Brazilian Music, Latin American Music, and Global Popular Music. His research focuses on the intersection of music and politics, particularly in authoritarian contexts. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from UCLA and a B.A. from Wesleyan University.
Prof. Whelden’s book project, Voicing Opinion: Musical Performance and Political Participation in Brazil, examines the musical theater production Opinião during Brazil’s 1964 military dictatorship. His work explores how performers and audiences navigated political repression through musical and social strategies. He has conducted fieldwork in Brazil, Ghana, India, and Ireland, supported by fellowships like the Thomas J. Watson and Lenart Fellowships.
His research has been published in Music & Politics, Journal of Extreme Anthropology, and The Oxford Handbook of Timbre. He co-created the podcast Massa: Brazilian Music & Culture, and has experience as a professional songwriter and touring musician.
Prof. Whelden has presented at conferences including the Society of Ethnomusicology and the Brazilian Studies Association. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, emphasizing accessible discussions of Brazilian music and culture.
