Claudia Calirman serves as Associate Professor of Art History and Chair of the Department of Art and Music at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her scholarly work centers on Latin American, Modern, and Contemporary Art with specialized expertise in Brazilian feminist art practices and political resistance.
Her research critically examines how Brazilian women artists navigated authoritarian regimes, processed trauma after military dictatorship, and challenged gender norms through visual culture. The book Dissident Practices: Brazilian Women Artists, 1960s-2020s documents three generations of artists confronting systemic oppression, while Brazilian Art under Dictatorship analyzes pivotal political interventions by male and female artists during Brazil's most repressive years (1968-1975).
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- 2013 Arvey Award from the Association for Latin American Art
- Arts Writers Grant from Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation
As an educator at John Jay and former MoMA instructor, she teaches Latin American Art, Modern Art, and Art & Justice courses. Her curatorial work includes exhibitions like Dissident Practices (Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery), Basta! Art and Violence in Latin America, and Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act, not Represent! (Americas Society). She contributes to the field as editorial board member of Woman's Art Journal and member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA).
