Monika Schmitz-Emans is a Professor of Comparative Literature at Ruhr-University Bochum since 1995. Her academic career includes roles as Lecturer at the University of Essen (1988/89–1994) and Chair of Modern European Literature at the Open University of Hagen (1992). She has held leadership positions such as President of the Jean Paul Society (2002) and Chairman of the German Society of General and Comparative Literature (1999–2005).
Educational Background:
- PhD in Germanistik, University of Bonn (1984)
- Habilitation in Bonn (1992) with thesis 'Scripture and absence: historical paradigms to a poetics of the deciphering and writing'
Her research focuses on general literary theory and poetics, comparative literature, and modern European literature. She has contributed to academic leadership through board memberships in the German Society of Comparative Literature (1996) and International Society for Comparative Studies (1997).
