Sayeed Ikramuddin serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. His leadership spans surgical oncology, bariatric procedures, and translational research initiatives including the Screening, Prevention, Etiology & Cancer Survivorship Institute and Institute for Engineering in Medicine.
His research focuses on bariatric surgery outcomes, metabolic disease treatment, and innovative surgical techniques. Key areas include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, vagus nerve stimulation for cardiovascular modulation, and wound healing mechanisms in chronic venous ulcers. His work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Recent publications demonstrate strong trends in genomic prediction of surgical outcomes, national practice variations in pediatric surgery, and metabolic pathway analysis in liver disease. His 2025 outputs show particular emphasis on precision medicine applications in bariatric surgery and neural modulation therapies.
Current major projects include:
- M-STEPP (NIH-funded cardiovascular outcomes study)
- REVEAL (vagal nerve excitation research)
- Phase III clinical trial for chronic venous ulcer treatment
- Midwest Murine-Tissue Mapping Center
Dr. Ikramuddin actively mentors surgical trainees and leads multidisciplinary teams across engineering and medical domains. His surgical leadership extends to pancreas transplantation protocols and management of therapy-resistant conditions. Recent media contributions include commentary on pioneering transplant surgeon John Najarian's legacy.
