Sayed Hassan Akhlaq is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of World Religions at George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in Islamic studies, philosophy of religion, and comparative philosophy. His teaching focuses on Shi'ite Islam's political thought, mysticism, and legal frameworks. Previously, he served as a Visiting Scholar at institutions including Catholic University of America (2012-2017), Princeton University (2017), and Boston University (2017-2018). He is also a Board Member of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies and teaches philosophy and ethics at Marymount University and Coppin State University.
Dr. Akhlaq holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Allameh Tabataba'i University (2009) and a degree in Islamic Classical Studies from Hawza Ilmiya Khurasan (2009). His research explores modernization in Islamic thought, critical theory applications, and environmental ethics within religious contexts. His publications investigate topics ranging from Shi'ite theological education to inter-religious dialogue dynamics in contemporary academia.
His work bridges Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, with notable contributions analyzing the intersection between sacred/secular frameworks and the impact of diasporic scholars on global academia. He actively engages in academic outreach, emphasizing critical thinking methodologies through works like The Etiquette Guidelines of Critical Thinking (2023).
