Raphael Dascalu is a Senior Research Fellow in the History of Jewish Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame's School of Philosophy & Theology and an Adjunct Research Associate at the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation, Monash University. His academic background includes a PhD from the University of Chicago (2016), an MA in Comparative Religion from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a BA from the University of Sydney.
His research expertise spans the history of philosophy, religion, and mysticism, with a focus on Jewish thought in the medieval Islamic world. He integrates historical, cultural, and literary contexts to explore Jewish philosophical and mystical traditions, particularly Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi's exegesis and Maimonidean theories. His work bridges interdisciplinary gaps between Jewish, Islamic, and medieval European intellectual traditions.
Raphael’s publications include critical editions, translations, and analyses of medieval Jewish texts, such as A Philosopher of Scripture: The Exegesis and Thought of Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi (Brill, 2019) and contributions to journals like Jewish Quarterly Review and Journal of Qur’anic Studies. His scholarship emphasizes intercultural dialogue and the evolution of religious thought.
