Saurabh Singhal

Saurabh Singhal is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Lancaster University, affiliated with the Lancaster University Management School. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southern California (2013) and an M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics (2006). His research focuses on development economics, political economy, and experimental economics, with emphasis on health, education, conflict, and human capital development. He has held positions at UNU-WIDER and the University of Delhi prior to his current role.

His research explores how individual and household decisions on health and education interact with political institutions and public policies. Key areas include the long-term effects of conflict on human capital (e.g., Peru), commodity price volatility impacts on farmers' mental health (Vietnam), and experimental studies on social identity and behavior in India. He also investigates the psychological impacts of cash transfers in Egypt and corruption on mental health in Vietnam.

Singhal is a Research Fellow at IZA Institute of Labor Economics and a Research Affiliate at the Households in Conflict Network (HiCN). He has supervised PhD students in development economics and contributed to projects like the 'Energy Transition and Climate Smart Agriculture in Vietnam' (2024–2028) and 'Enhancing Vocational Education in Vietnam' (2020–2024).

His work spans multiple continents, including studies in India, Ethiopia, Peru, and sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on policy-relevant insights for development challenges. He frequently presents at international conferences and collaborates with institutions like the World Bank and the United Nations.
