Sauerwein

Prof. Dr. Sauerwein is a full Professor and Chair of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Economics and Computer Science, University of Hildesheim, a position he has held since 2008. He previously served as Dean (2011–2019) and is currently Vice Dean (since 2019) of the Faculty, as well as a member of the University Senate since 2023. His academic career includes professorial roles at the University of Leipzig and Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, and research positions at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg.

His research interests span Soil Science and Protection, Urban and Landscape Ecology, Geoarchaeology, Substance Budget Modeling, and Education for Sustainable Development, with regional expertise in Mediterranean areas, floodplains, and loess landscapes. His methodological focus integrates geoecological assessment and modeling approaches to understand human-environment interactions in urban and natural systems.

Prof. Sauerwein has made significant contributions to the understanding of urban soil landscapes, as evidenced by his habilitation thesis on the subject. His work bridges scientific research and environmental policy, particularly in soil conservation and sustainable land use planning. He has held leadership roles in academic governance and departmental development over the past decade.
